Our Approach

Plan Your Cruise Vacation with Aurora Cruises and Travel

We respect our suppliers and don't discount their products unless they give us a special price to sell.

  • We don't sell cruise products that are below our level of standards.
  • We offer our clients only products when we are confident in their quality.

If you have a terrible cruise experience because your agent only talked about price, you lost your time and money. You can replace your money. But you never return your time and awful taste about the experience.

We work with simple yet powerful principles at Aurora Cruises and Travel. – We care about your cruise vacation!

'We care' means that we:

  • Offer you the best suppliers available on the market. – This means best cruise lines, best ships, best staterooms in your budget, best shore activities, and best pre-cruise or post-cruise hotels for you.
  • Offer remarkable overall quality of service and unique travel experience.

Cruise Travel Agent: We are Here to Help

Nowadays, many travelers strongly believe that an online agency is the only way to book an ocean cruise. Yes, you are right! Online agencies are the same as retail travel agencies with one difference. - They work online.

So, everyone who has any computer, phone, or laptop device can be their cruise travel agent.

You need to decide on:

  1. Budget for your cruise vacation. - No one can suggest increasing the budget on this item and saving money on another.
  2. Which cruise line to choose. – Each cruise line has its target audience that has its demographics. No one will let you know that line is mainly for seniors 70+ and another one is for party-goers 21+.
  3. Which ship to choose. – Each ship belongs to a ship class with similar features. Even ships in the same class have different features. Nobody will tell you to pick up this ship instead of that.
  4. Which stateroom category to choose. – Some cruise ships have 40+ categories of staterooms. No one will tell you which is better for you.
  5. Which cabin location to choose. – There are 18+ decks on some ships with locations forward, midship, or aft. No one can tell you which location is the best for you.
  6. Which dinner seating to pick up. – There are three dinner seating available on most cruise lines. No one can tell you which to pick up.
  7. What shore excursions to choose from. – Most cruise lines have an extensive list of excursions or activities. Also, there are many options from local providers in each port of call. – No one can tell you what the best option for you is in each port of call.
  8. What hotel to choose before the cruise. – You must arrive at the city of departure one night before a cruise. No one will tell you which hotel is the best for cruise passengers and offers transfers to the terminal.
  9. What return flight to pick up after cruise. – Debarkation is a lengthy process and takes a few hours after ships arrive at the final port. – No one will tell you which flight will be the best for you.
  10. What insurance to purchase for your cruise vacation that covers all segments. – With current restrictions and uncertainty, insurance is a must, not optional. No one will tell you which insurance has the best coverage for you.
  11.  Finally, you will take responsibility for all hiccups during your cruise vacation. – No one will assist you in an unpredictable situation.

Review this list one more time. Each item there requires extensive research. Planning a relaxing cruise vacation turns into a second job for you.

It is essential to know that cruise lines pay commission to all cruise travel agents: online and offline.

So, if you book directly with a cruise line, you don't receive the service you suppose to receive. If you book with an online agency, they receive money from a cruise line but do not provide service cruise line is paid for.

A real cruise travel agent is the only option to receive service and help.

The problem is that it is hard to find the travel agent that you need.

Cruise Travel Agents Are Not the Same

It is hard to find a cruise travel agent that you can trust.

A lot of our clients tell us about this problem.

So, a good cruise travel agent receives business mainly by referrals.

Some clients even don't want to make referrals. They are concerned that their cruise travel agent will give less attention due to many clients.

Not every cruise travel agent is the same because a few reasons:

  1.  There are no industry standards for cruise travel agents' services.
  2.  There are no educational requirements to join this trade. Some cruise travel agents have advanced degrees, while others don't have a high school diploma.
  3. Many cruise travel agents are F&F (friends and family.) – They sell cruises for friends and families and don't want to learn more about their trade.
  4. According to 2020 data, only 67% of travel agents sell travel as a significant source of income. One-third of travel agents are part-timers who sell cruises as a side gig.
  5. Most travel agents belong to so-called hosts. The host is a middleman in the travel industry for those agents who don't meet requirements to work directly with suppliers and lack top accreditation.

“It is hard to find a competent travel agent,” Nadia Jastrjembskaia

"Here, in Aurora Cruises and Travel, our goal is to give our cruisers an outstanding cruising experience."

Nadia Jastrjembskaia, Managing Director, Aurora Cruises and Travel

Above mentioned reasons lead to the following problems for you as a consumer:

  •  They position themselves as cruise experts while their actual knowledge and first-hand experience are minimal.
  • You don't receive the service that is expected. For example, a travel agent may refuse to reprice cruise fare to the lowest price available after a booking is made.
  • They don't have first-hand knowledge about cruise ships and amenities due to insufficient training and lack of cruise experience on the cruise line they offer to you.
  •  They don't have experience of cruising in different regions, don't know destinations and logistics in various ports of call.
Nadia Jastrjembskaia cruise travel agent in Rome
“Internet is for looking. I am here for booking,” Nadia Jastrjembskaia

Amateur cruise agents are untrained.

They have just paid someone a membership fee for a card that says they're real travel agents.

Those kinds of agents gave a bad name to other travel agents. They easily co-pay for your vacation because they don't need commissions at all. They have a stable source of income other than travel. They need the volume of bookings to receive a special travel agent rate from a cruise line.

How do they co-pay for you? Easy! They tell their clients cruise fare 10-15% less than the prevailing rate and pay the difference by using their credit card.

Don't expect any customer service from amateur cruise agents.

  • They don't want to hear from you after the transaction is made.
  • They don't know the products.
  • They don't want to be certified.
  • They don't care about you. – Those cruise agents were first to shut down their phones when the pandemic started.

If you are looking for this kind of cruise travel agent, you are on the wrong site.

We are just opposite:

  1.  We constantly learn about new cruise products and destinations, attend ship inspections and seminars at sea.
  2. We care about our professional certifications. Nadia Jastrjembskaia, managing director, is one of the tops in the cruising industry worldwide.
  3.  We are your only point of contact for your cruise vacation: from our first virtual meeting up to your thank you email after you are back.

Your Cruise Travel Agent Must be Competent

A competent cruise travel agent can be your greatest asset when planning a cruise vacation.

"Competent" is a keyword. – A person who knows very well what she is doing. She is not a call center worker or a hobbyist who paid a few hundred bucks for agency credentials.

There are enough terrible stories about travel agents on the Internet.

"Competent" means certified by Cruise Line International Association (CLIA.) Certified doesn't mean competent. At least, you know that this travel agent was on a cruise ship twice and passed an elementary test.

How to Find a Good Cruise Travel Agent?

Here are a few tips from Nadia Jastrjembskaia, Elite Cruise Counsellor from CLIA.

Background check k for a cruise travel agent and her agency
Before contacting a cruise travel agent, find more information about this person.

cruise travel agent certification
“Certificate from Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) is a must for a cruise travel agent,”- Nadia Jastrjembskaia

#1 Certification

Certification from CLIA is a must. No substitutes and excuses. The higher is better.

The rule is straightforward: a more complicated and expensive cruise vacation and a higher level of certification are required.

Make sure that agency your cruise travel agent belongs to is appropriately regulated and ethically conducts business. Your ideal travel agency must operate under its own IATA number. – The most respected level of certification.

This requirement became extremely important during pandemia.

Travel agencies certified for IATA numbers make bookings directly through the supplier. This means that a travel agent can solve your problem directly with a cruise line or airline. She is an official 'agent in records' and can solve your problem with cancellation or delay by communicating with the supplier.

Many travel agents book travel through a middleman – a host agency.

The travel agent is not an official agent in records but the host agency she belongs to. This creates situations when a travel agent can't directly contact the supplier. – She must report a problem to the host agency where they decide to help or not.

#2 Social Media Presence

Check cruise travel agent's social media. What kind of cruises does she promote?

How often she makes promotional posts? - If you see very affordable cruises and 'special' pricing practically every day, this means that she works mainly with budget-cautious clientele and constantly looks for new customers.

Well-established cruise travel agents have repeat business and are very selective to new clients.

Budget pricing is an indication of what she sells and to whom. If she sells mostly Carnival Cruises and you need to book Crystal, this cruise travel agent is not a good fit.

Check posts from cruises and travel a travel agent took. How often do they travel?

Posts with many cruises mean that travel agents are hobbyists and don't take the travel business seriously. – She is busy with her travel and doesn't have time to care about her clients.

Check if you see the evidence that a cruise travel agent experiences the product you are interested in.

What kind of products do you see this travel agent on? It doesn't make sense to work with a cruise travel agent who mostly cruises on MSC and tries to sell you SeaDream.

check social media cruise travel agent
“Check a cruise agent’s social media and find what kind of cruises and for whom she sells. Don’t book Crystal cruise from a Carnival specialist. “ – Nadia Jastrjembskaia
cruise travel agent website
“Ignore phrase ‘we offer great service.’ Look at specific travel services a cruise travel agent offers on her website, “ - Nadia Jastrjembskaia

#3 Agency Website

Check the travel agent's agency website.

Does it look like a cookie-cutter with 'specials' about everything: cruises, hotels, destinations all over the world? – Not the right agent to work with – generalist, doesn't have enough experience in one of the niches.

Also, newbies or part-timers receive this website for free as a part of the package from the host agency.

Does the website specify what kind of services this cruise agent offer? – Other than the phrase 'We offer great services.'

Does this website have a list of services and experiences you are looking for?

No website or cookie-cutter website means that this travel agency doesn't take business seriously and doesn't want to invest in a high-quality website.

Video Conferencing with a Cruise Travel Agent

After selecting your cruise travel agent, ask for video conferencing, even if this agent doesn't offer this option.

Video conferencing is more personal: you can look the agent in the eye and evaluate non-verbal communication. You will have a better idea if this person is the right person for your project.

videoconferencing with a cruise travel agent
“Video conferencing with a cruise travel agent is a must,” Nadia Jastrjembskaia

Be prepared for the interview with your cruise travel agent:

  1. Prepare questions to ask.
  2. Accept the fact that well-established and reputable cruise travel agents have enough business to care about, and in some situations, a cruise travel agent may not accept you are a client.
  3. Well-established and reputable cruise travel agents charge fees for their service. Most cruise lines reduced commissions by implementing the 'non-commissible' part of cruise fares. Additionally, some suppliers don't pay commission at all. So, the suggestion to pay a service fee means that a cruise travel agent works for you, not for the supplier. She will offer products without calculating commissions from them.
  4. A well-established and reputable cruise agent will not rebate her commission and give onboard credit out of her pocket. Live this for newbies and online agencies. They need volume, not you with your needs. On the contrary, the best cruise travel agent will need you and do everything to meet your expectations.

Questions to Ask a Cruise Travel Agent

During the video interview with a cruise travel agent, ask the following questions:

  • How long have they been in business?
  • What are the challenges to staying in business during pandemia?
  • How do you help your clients solve problems during cruise vacations?
  • What are common problems to solve?
  • What cruise trade certification do they have?
  • What are their fees for a cruise vacation?
  • Ask to name cruise lines they sell the most.
  • What stateroom categories do they sell the most?
  • What kind of cruise vacation do they sell the most: families, singles, couples?
  • How does she handle complaints about a cruise vacation?
  • Can she reprice the cruise fare after the booking is made but before the final payment?
  • Is she able to help with a travel insurance claim, if any?
  • What does she do when a flight is delayed and logistics for a cruise vacation are broken?
  • What does she do if the hotel she booked for you is overbooked?
  • How does she make bookings: through host or directly with cruise line and other suppliers?
  • Can she provide 'Guest Copy' from a cruise line with her name and agency with proof that she is an agent in records?
  • How often does she sell the XXX cruise line? Or XXXX ship? What kind of relationships does she have with the XXX cruise line?
  • Who will charge my credit card: your agency or cruise line?
ask questions cruise travel agent
“Ask as more as possible questions about a cruise travel agent’s experiences and qualifications,” – Nadia Jastrjembskaia

Observe your prospective cruise travel agent's responses.

  1. Does she rush to finish the interview?
  2. Does she listen more than talk?
  3. Does she seem pressed to make a booking decision?
  4. Douse she seems distracted or focused on helping you?
  5. Do you trust her?
  6. Does your intuition tell you that she is the right cruise travel agent for you?
  7. Does she talk about herself and her agency most of the time without giving you are chance to ask questions?
  8. If you don't feel right about this cruise travel agent, move on.

Remember: if a cruise travel agent tells you that she will provide you with an 800 number to call, this is not your travel agent.

How a Best Cruise Travel Agent Looks

The core of the travel business is relationships and experiences. Find the travel agent before you need her and establish relationships."

  • Know what YOU want.
  • Speak your language.

Hold on to your travel agent for life once you find the best one.

Don't just interview one cruise travel agent.

Conduct video interviews with a few to find the best match.

More options you have for your cruise vacation it is better. Be open to surprises and step out of your comfort zone. The most memorable experiences are unexpected.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does it cost more to book a cruise through a travel agent?

Not necessary. If you book a cruise through us, you will pay the same price as to cruise line. In some situations, our prices are better than the prevailing rate from cruise lines due to the block rate (known as a group rate.)

While working with Aurora Cruises and Travel, you pay directly to the cruise line. This means that the cruise line will charge your credit card. You book directly with a cruise line via a travel agent. As a bonus, you receive our services in most cases for free.

Is it better to book a cruise with a travel agent?

It depends. If you prefer to solve all your problems with a supplier and don't need professional help, booking directly with a cruise line is better.

A cruise travel agent's services give you additional comfort and help you make well-informed decisions.

Also, it depends on the cruise travel agent. – There are a lot of hobbyists and incompetent agents on the market. Would you please read above how to pick up the best cruise travel agent?

Do travel agents get better cruise prices than cruise lines?

In many situations, yes. There are two possibilities for you to receive a better price while working with a cruise travel agent:

  1. A travel agent has a block cruise fare (known as a group rate) that, in some cases, is less than the prevailing rate.
  2. A travel agent can reprice your cruise if the price drops after making the booking. – Some restrictions may apply.

Should I use a travel agent for a Viking cruise?

It is up to you. Viking products are expensive, and it is better to have somebody who can help you make a well-informed decision.

If you don't like to be served and pampered, it is better to book directly with Viking.

In case of conflicting situations, you will be the only one who will solve a problem.

How to transfer cruise booking to a travel agent for the same price?

Many cruise companies allow transferring direct bookings to travel agents. In this case, prices are locked. This means that there is no extra charge to move a booking to a cruise travel agent.

Benefits are obvious: you will receive services that you otherwise paid for but never received.
Additionally, your cruise travel agent will be able to reprice your cruise if a price drops. – Some restrictions may apply.

How do travel agents get paid for cruises?

Cruise lines compensate travel agents for selling their products.

The commission is built into the price. You can't receive a discount if you book directly with a cruise line. In this case, you pay for the service that you don't receive.

Sue to the fact that cruise lines implemented a non-commissionable portion of the cruise fare, travel agents' commission became insufficient.

Some cruise lines pay $3-5 per booking on their cruises.
To stay in business, travel agents charge fees for their services.

Can a travel agent get me a better deal on a cruise?

If you are looking for a 'deal' due to an extremely tight budget, it is better to book online through numerous online agencies.

Don't expect too much of them. If your goal is to save money but not an experience, it is better to give them your business.

How much can a travel agent write off for a cruise?

Asking a travel agent for an 'incentive' after a travel agent spent time to find you the right cruise is not ethical.

Well-trained and well-established travel agents will not compete for your business if you ask about a discount.

Newbies, hobbyists, and part-timers may be interested. They don't need commission due to another source of income. They need a volume to receive travel agent rates on their cruise.

Should I book my Royal Caribbean cruise with a travel agent or their website?

If you are happy with a price, you agree to pay Royal Caribbean, book with them on their website.

If you are looking for services and the possibility to save, it is better to book through Aurora Cruises and Travel.

We have thousands of block spaces (known as group rates) with Royal Caribbean. In many cases, our block rates are better than the prevailing rate on Royal Caribbean's site.

Also, we can reprice your cruise rate if the price drops before the final payment.

Sign for 20-minutes consultation to learn more about our Royal Caribbean program.

Is there an advantage to transfer a cruise booking to a travel agent?

There are two advantages to transferring the booking to a travel agent in Aurora Cruises and Travel.

  1.  You will receive service that you paid for but didn't receive. – Travel agent's commission is built into Royal Caribbean's price model. So, you will never receive a discount for booking directly.
  2. You may have a possibility to reduce your cruise fare due to our block space program with Royal Caribbean International. Or we can reprice your cruise rate if the price drops before the final payment.

Sign for the free consultation to learn more about your options.

Can you use cruise credits when booking through a travel agent?

Yes, absolutely! You can use your Future Cruise Certificate (FCC) to book your next cruise through us.
